Two pieces of advice for new caterers who need catering supplies

Here are two pieces of advice to remember if you're a new caterer and are about to purchase supplies for your enterprise from an event catering supply site.

Consider the climate of the area where you expect to cater events

Rather than just looking online for a generic list of must-have equipment that every caterer needs and ordering everything on this list from the catering supply website, you should consider the climate of the area where you plan to cater events, as doing this could help you to avoid ordering supplies that you don't actually need.

For example, if your catering business will be based in an area where it's always warm and the sun shines all year round, and catered events like weddings and birthday parties are routinely held on local beaches and in parks, then you probably won't need, for example, a soup maker, as soup is a very warming food that's better suited to indoor occasions held in chillier climates.

If you occasionally encounter a client who requests this dish, you can always make a batch in a saucepan and use a stick blender to puree it. Instead of this equipment, you might want to invest in a high-quality ice-cream maker, as well as a commercial ice maker, as many of your clients will probably ask for freshly made ice-cream and cold drinks for their events that will take place on sunny days or hot, humid evenings.

Stick with plain white disposable catering supplies

If you want to buy disposable catering supplies (such as napkins, paper plates, straws, paper tablecloths, etc.) in bulk from the event catering supply site, it's best to order plain white versions of these items. The reason for this is that whilst many of your clients will have party themes, plain white versions of these supplies will work well with any type of event décor.

In contrast, if you order a huge supply of, for instance, patterned, colourful napkins or bright red paper cups, many of your clients might not want you to use these at their event because they'll clash with their party décor, and you might have to order plain versions of these supplies specifically for these events. As such, if you want to ensure that you can make use of these disposable supplies that you order in bulk, it's best to opt for the plainest and most neutral-coloured versions of them that are available.
